With the winter 2015/16 season almost upon us, the Pennine Gritting team have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming gritting season.
El Nino may not be a term you've heard before but those of you who remember the last one during the 2009/2010 winter, will remember the huge amounts of snow that blanketed the UK & Northern Ireland. These large events can set off an atmospheric chain reaction which weakens the jet stream (a ribbon of strong, high wind known to have a big influence on our weather). This can lead to bitter British winters which are dry but produce large amounts of snow.
The experts at the NOAA and The Met Office are currently predicting a 95% chance of a record-breaking "Super El Nino".
With this in mind, we have stocked up on salt and prepared all of our machinery ready for 1st October when we will be on-call 24/7 for the rest of the winter (until around April 2016 weather dependant).
